THE STORY

  • The Normal Heart production poster, with two actors on the cover.

Based on true events, Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart follows a group of gay men encountering the beginning of the catastrophic AIDS epidemic in America. Set in New York in the early 1980s, the characters wrestle with a disease that drives social and political injustice, and fear so widespread that most in authority refuse to get involved. Weaving together a story of romance and politics, The Normal Heart offers a scalding indictment of discrimination, while showcasing the power of love and community in a time of crisis.

STORYTELLERS

  • Larry Kramer headshot.

Larry Kramer, born in 1935, is a playwright, film producer, author, and activist for the LGBTQ+ community. After witnessing the spread of an unknown disease, later known as AIDS, among his friends in the early 1980s, Kramer co-founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. Later, he would turn to more radical tactics to draw attention to the AIDS epidemic by founding the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP). The Normal Heart (1985), Kramer’s largely autobiographical play, is fueled by Kramer’s anger and frustration as the number of gay deaths rise and society refuses to demonstrate adequate concern.
